Everything Hits At Once…

As I have said in previous posts, I am compiling a songbook of Indie Rock songs so that when I roll to parties and what have you, people can sing along and other guitarists can jump in. This comes from how annoying it is to resort to playing the same songs everyone knows or just playing rhythm for someone while they solo and vice versa.

While I have no problem with “jamming”, that sort of free form expression attracts musicians and often repels others when they cannot sing along. Also annoying is having to sing the same verse over and over again when you cannot think of the all the words to a song. So now I have a binder full of indie-goodness to share with all of you!

This post, I have decided to share a Spoon song called “Everything Hits At Once” from the album Girls Can Tell. Britt Daniel’s voice and guitar playing have taught me a lot about keeping things simple and clean. A true Lennon-ite, Britt is not afraid to get raspy and growl a bit when singing, so keep the guitar playing clean and the singing dirty, people! Here it is in all it’s glory.

IN/RAINBOWS

Radiohead's new album announced tonight; IN/RAINBOWS debuts October 10th.

Well folks, let me apologize for my absence from the blogging scene, life has a way of giving you way too much to do each day. But let me make it up to you by letting you know that Radiohead’s new album, IN/RAINBOWS has just been announced tonight. Head over to http://www.radiohead.com and see for yourself! I have heard a lot of the songs on the tracklist indicated on the site, and I believe that this album will one of the quintet’s best ever. I would also like to commend the band for not bowing to the record industry, and choosing to put out their album themselves digitally. There are two choices for rabid fans like myself, and both are revolutionary.

Option 1, the consumer can opt to buy the album by pre-ordering digital downloads which will be available after your purchase on the 10th of October. Not only that, but word has it that Radiohead has chosen to not set a price for the downloads themselves, and it is apparently left up to the consumer how much they would like to pay for the album. This is a radically different view on record pricing than we have ever seen. More on that below.

Option 2 is a gorgeous set of Radiohead paraphernalia including the 2(!) Disc CD itself, a vinyl copy of the album, Lyric books and limited edition jackets, all packaged in a beautiful collectors book. Mind you, it does cost $80 USD, but I had a hard time trying fill out the information on the site and locate my wallet simultaneously. (I couldn’t give them my money fast enough.)

Radiohead may be one of the only acts on earth (except for possibly the Grateful Dead) who could offer their album for a variable price, and know that the good-will flowing from their fans would result in reasonable dollar amounts being entered on the Download Order Form page. Perhaps this is a new way of looking at music sales? While I concede it does not work as well for bands that are still trying to break out to the public consciousness, I predict sales numbers will be huge for Radiohead’s IN/RAINBOWS. And of course, being true to good ol’ record shop fan salivation, they have chosen to make their material available in both super-premium record and CD configurations, allowing the band’s incredible graphic artist Stanley Donwood to adorn their new goods with only the finest (and oddly weird) design.

Man. I cannot wait 10 days for this to come out. Track reviews to come soon! :)
